Output Considerations with Carolyn Lefley

On Friday 23rg November 2012, we had a lecture with photographer Carolyn Lefley who showed us and suggested different ways for us to present our final pieces from the current assignment that we are undergoing at the moment. Below are my notes that I took from this specific lecture:

Format/Print size/Finish

  • Format
    • Book
    • Exhibition
    • Framed
  • Print size
    • 5×8
    • 5×7
  • Finish
    • Matt
    • Semi matte (satin or pearl)
    • Gloss
  • Format
    • Large or small?
      • If I had a bigger budget I would print on a larger scale to show the detail within the portraits
    • What will suit the work?
    • All portrait/landscape or a mix of the two
    • In a portfolio?
  • Size
    • Large or small paper size?
    • Borderless?
    • With borders?
  • Finish
    • SURFACE
      • Matte
      • Semi-matte (satin or pearl)
      • Gloss
    • MOUNTED?
    • BOOK?
  • Thicker bottom border has a historical context and it grounds your work
  • Window mount using mount board
  • Look at sequencing
  • Concertina book – just use magic tape
  • Can put the prints within a cardboard box
  • Photo zines
  • Image and Text?
  • Don’t actually have to mount your images but show your thought process by using Photoshop to show different ideas

  • Think about how best to present your project
  • Does it have a linear narrative?
  • Would it work as a small book?
  • Do the prints work best as small or large?
